Looking Back 30 Years Ago: Stockton steps down as coach at NACC

50 Years Ago From the Herald and Democrat in 1968 Thanks to Mr. Harold Garrett, who was wrecking the Chandler Building (located at the corner of University and Mt. Olive where the parking lot is now) they were able to get in print, a bit of history of activities in the city, shortly after the turn of the century.

The west side upstairs was the “Opera House,” where all sorts of entertainment was held, high school functions, plays, both local and road companies, concerts and later, dances.

Many names that were well known to old-timers were written on the wall telling the particular part played in stage productions.

Siloam Springs native Jim Stockton, a 1967 graduate of Siloam Springs High School and a 1972 graduate of John Brown University, resigned as head women’s basketball coach at North Arkansas Community College in Harrison, to take on an administrative job with the school.

The 38-year-old Stockton led NACC to five Arkansas Junior College Conference basketball titles and compiled a record of 248-77 in his 11-year reign as head coach of the Lady Pioneers.

Stockton’s 1984-85 Lady Pioneers were 29-4, won both the conference and state titles and became the only Arkansas junior college women’s team to be ranked in the top-20 nationally.

Stockton was four times tabbed as the Arkansas Junior College Conference “coach of the year” and was a former member of the Kodak Junior College/ Community College Women’s All-America Basketball Team selection committee.

in 2008 Representatives from Siloam Springs attended the Main Street Arkansas Downtown Institute in Little Rock.

Ron Drake, Sue Truitt, Gloria McEnroe, Larry Winder, Diane Winder and Steve Dulany attended to represent Siloam Springs at the event.

The training included presentations on how to organize a downtown revitalization program, ways to promote downtown area, how to position downtowns economically and about streetscapes and historic architectural design.

A future visit to Siloam Springs was planned by Gregg Phillips, assistant director of Main Street Arkansas, to work with volunteers on the next steps for revitalizing downtown Siloam Springs.
