- By Dolores Deuel Siloam Springs Public Library

School has been in session for two to three weeks for students. Just as schools have many learning opportunities for their students, the library has many learning opportunities for its patrons of all ages. We have books, and yes, you can learn from fiction books as well as from non-fiction books. Audiobooks, DVDs and magazines are other formats which help provide learning opportunities. Games that people can play are also available at the library which helps its players with cognitive skills.

Universal Class is a source for classes which can be accessed through the library’s website. You can learn about Assertiveness Training, History’s Greatest Conspiracies, Pinterest, and World Religions 101. Algebra 101 can provide a parent with a review course, so they could help their child with algebra or it can be an auxiliary class to help a student understand algebra better. Bird Watching 101 can help you identify birds as they begin their migration north.

There will also be new classes coming in 2019. In the works are Cybersecurity 101, Disaster Preparedness 101, Lawful Employee Termination, Microsoft 2019, etc. Universal Class offers over 500 classes. You can take up to five classes simultaneously and you have six months to finish these classes. Please ask staff questions about Universal Class and try a class for yourself.

Arkansas Traveler, a service which is offered through the Arkansas State Library, has databases such as Academic Worldbook, CultureGrams, MANGO Languages, Medline, etc. These databases offer material to help students with assignments or the general user with additional knowledge about subjects they are interested in.

Arkansas DMV Practice Tests is a database which allows its users to take practice tests before taking their driver’s test. It is also a resource for seasoned drivers as it helps users to review Arkansas laws related to driving. Some of the tests are available in Spanish. You have access to driver’s handbooks, one of which is also available in Spanish.
