JBU athletics named to NAIA Scholar-Team
For the second year in a row, each John Brown University intercollegiate athletics team was honored as a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Team. The 11 squads, with the addition of men’s and women’s track and field, broke last year’s highest total ever of nine.
Once again, the women’s cross country program led all Golden Eagle teams with a 3.72 grade-point average, followed closely by volleyball (3.67), women’s track and field (3.61) and women’s basketball (3.59). Women’s tennis (3.56), women’s soccer (3.53), men’s cross country (3.48), along with men’s track and field and men’s tennis (3.47) all earned over a 3.25 mark. Men’s basketball (3.17) and men’s soccer (3.07) also made the cut.
The Golden Eagles posted the top team GPA in the Sooner Athletic in four sports: Women’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s track and field and men’s track and field.
Just last week, it was announced that a record 115 student-athletes were selected to the SAC Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.0 grade-point average minimum) with the SAC Academic All-Conference and NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors still looming in the near future.
“I am very proud of each and every one of our Golden Eagle teams that were named NAIA Scholar-Teams,” said Robyn Daugherty, director of athletics. “This award really highlights the hard work JBU student-athletes are doing in the classroom and it encourages our coaches who work so hard with our student-athletes in competition, but also in academics, leadership and character building.”
For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade-point average includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
