■ You didn’t think you’d win. “I really thought it was going to be Michael [E. Knight, Martin, GH] and that was before I got the chance to see everybody’s clips. When I saw them, I went, ‘Oh, my God. There’s so much talent in this category,’ so at that point, I thought it could really be anybody’s win. I was just going to watch the virtual show with my daughter and a
friend so it was supposed to be a lowkey night. I ran a bunch of errands that day and when I came back, my daughter threw a surprise viewing party for me. She decorated the house with balloons and flowers and there was even a little red carpet up to the front door. A bunch of my friends and family were there to watch with me.” Did you find taping the acceptance speeches gave you less
anxiety? “We recorded our acceptance speeches like a week and a half before, so the only stress was getting it under 60 seconds. There are always people you don’t have the time to thank and you wish you could. Of course it would’ve been exciting to walk up on the stage to accept it. That would’ve been so bad-ass. When I saw my acceptance speech, I thought it looked unnatural because I was so calm, like I win Emmys every friggin’ day. When I won, I was so excited that I jumped into my pool. Then I flew out to Colorado the next morning.” Who did you hear from after your victory? “My phone blew up. I was trying to balance phone calls and texting and being with my friends. It was so cool. Everyone knows what I’ve been through in the last four months; I was so excited to see the energy shift in such a dramatic way. Jeffrey Vincent Parise [ex-simon, Y&R] posted the funniest video on Instagram of when he found out that he didn’t win. It’s hysterical.” Does this still seem surreal? “I can’t wait to touch it. I mean, I want to hold it, then it’ll be real. Right now, it’s still a virtual Emmy but when it arrives, it’ll be a real Emmy. Then I think it’ll be the second stage of that rocket for what I’m feeling.”
