LONG LIVE WASQUE

-

Thank you for Steve Knauth’s entertaining and informative history on Wasque boats in the August issue. Chris Hood’s resurrection of the 26 mold is a terrific story.

We found our Wasque in 2001. We had looked at numerous boats since being bitten by the Wasque bug years earlier. My wife and I finally settled on our Wasque 32, Old Bay, during our honeymoon, which must have brought us good luck. The boat and the marriage have been pure joy all of those 16 years.

My teenage son and I took Old Bay from Annapolis to Martha’s Vineyard last year to visit her birth yard, and we got the thumbsup from Phil Hale, Tom Hale’s son. Phil still runs Martha’s Vineyard Shipyard; his father passed away a few years ago. Old Bay performed the 1,000- nautical- mile round trip flawlessly, and she provided the perfect setting to pass my passion for the sea to my son.

Steve Knauth’s article about Wasque boats left out a builder of the 26. I own a 1986 Wasque 26 built by C&C Yachts when the company was in Rhode Island. You can see some of the C&C sailboat traits in the construction. I also heard through the grapevine that Bruckmann might have built some early on in the 1970s.

We use our boat on Lake Champlain, and it receives the thumbs- up every time we are out.
