Have Paddle, Will Travel
Audrey Sutherland decided at age 60 that she’d undertake a solo, summerlong kayak voyage along the southeast coast of Alaska. In Paddling North: A Solo Adventure Along the Inside Passage, Sutherland describes what became the first two of more than 20 annual trips, with day-by-day travels through the Inside Passage from Ketchikan to Skagway. In 22 years, she encountered more than 30 bears, four wolves and hundreds of whales. Her lifelong philosophy, “Go simple, go solo, go now,” is illustrated in this reflection-filled book, which includes maps, illustrations and camp food recipes. ($17, Patagonia)
