Three people were killed early Saturday in a fiery wrong-way crash on an Interstate 95 exit ramp in Boca Raton, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

A 2012 Kia Optima with two people in it was traveling north on the southbound I-95 exit ramp at Palmetto Park Road when the accident happened at about 12:55 a.m., said FHP Lt. Alvaro Feola.

The car struck a 2018 Hyundai Sonata with one woman inside. She was exiting the interstate, the FHP reported. The Hyundai burst into flames after the collision.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene by Boca Raton Fire-Rescue personnel, Feola said. Their names were not released pending notification of next of kin.

The Kia was being driven by a 35-year-old male and had a 25-year-old female as a passenger, officials said.

The Hyundai was being driven by a female whose age was not released, officials said.

The force of the head-on collision knocked the Kia sideways. It came to rest facing east on the exit ramp.

The Hyundai rotated in the same direction and was engulfed in flames as it came to rest, facing east.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Feola said. There is a construction zone on Palmetto Park Road at the interchange for bridge work that is being done to add express lanes to that portion of the interstate.
