NFL camps set to open on time

The NFL has informed teams their training camps will open on time.

League executive Troy Vincent sent a memo to general managers and head coaches on Saturday informing them rookies can report by Tuesday, quarterbac­ks and injured players by Thursday and all other players can arrive by July 28.

Rookies for the Texans and Chiefs are set to report Monday.

The league and the NFL Players Associatio­n are still discussing testing for the coronaviru­s and other health and safety protocols. Union leadership expressed several concerns in a 90minute conference call with reporters Friday.

However, under the collective bargaining agreement, the NFL can impose report dates.

The NFLPA could file a grievance to argue the league isn’t providing a safe work environmen­t under the labor deal.

“The league is management,” NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said Friday. “They have the exclusive right, just like somebody who owns a plant, regarding when it opens and when it closes. They want training camps to open on time. The role of the union is to hold them accountabl­e about whether it’s safe to open now.”

Kyle Busch celebrated a 10th NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at Texas, and then had it taken away. Busch failed postrace tech inspection after finishing ahead of Austin Cindric, who was declared the winner for the third victory in a row after winning both Xfinity races at Kentucky. NASCAR said the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was disqualifi­ed for failing heights.

Suspended Yankees RHP Domingo German cast doubt on his baseball future with curious Instagram posts Friday night. He put online an Instagram story with words that translated to: “I’ve left baseball. Thanks everyone.” German, who has 63 games left to serve in his suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy, was 18-4 with a 4.03 ERA last season. ... Tigers RHP Jordan Zimmermann is going on the 45-day injured list because of a strained forearm. ... Rick Reed, whose career as a big league umpire spanned three decades and included two AllStar games and a World Series, has died. He was 70.

Arizona State G Alonzo Verge Jr. is withdrawin­g his name from the NBA draft and will return for his senior season. The Chicago native was named the Pac-12 sixth man of the year after averaging 14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed the death of former world junior pairs figure skating champion Ekaterina Alexandrov­skaya, 20, in Moscow. The cause of old Alexandrov­skaya’s death on Friday has not yet been disclosed. She was born in Russia but in 2016 obtained Australian citizenshi­p and competed for her adopted country at the 2018 Pyeongchan­g Olympics with skating partner Harley Windsor.

Joel Stalter closed with a 2-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the Euram Bank Open in Ramsau, Austria, the second straight Austrian event that counts toward the European Tour and the Challenge Tour. Stalter had gone 80 tournament­s worldwide since his only previous victory as a pro, in 2016 at the Swedish Challenge. He rallied from a four-shot deficit, finishing on 14-under 266. Richard Mansell shot 71 and was alone in second.
