Robinson named as new coach for DBs

- By David Furones

The Miami Hurricanes announced Saturday the hiring of Miami native Travaris Robinson, a touted college football recruiter who has defensive coordinator experience, as defensive backs coach.

Robinson spent the past five seasons as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at South Carolina under coach Will Muschamp, with whom the Gamecocks parted ways at the end of the season.

“We are excited to welcome Travaris and his family back to Miami,” Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said in a statement. “He is a proven defensive coach and an excellent recruiter who will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff.”

Robinson’s addition signifies the Hurricanes will go with one defensive backs coach instead of the previous split they had with Ephraim Banda as safeties coach and Mike Rumph coaching cornerbacks. Banda accepted the defensive coordinator job at Utah State, while Rumph is not being retained on the coaching staff.

Robinson was also defensive backs coach at Florida from 2011 to 2014 and Auburn in 2015 before arriving at South Carolina ahead of the 2016 season. His addition gives UM three position coaches with previous coordinator experience in college football — offensive line coach Garin Justice and wide receivers coach Rob Likens being the others.

Rumph, a Miami alum, has his tenure as cornerbacks coach end after five seasons. He was a starter on the 2001 national championship team before he was selected in the first round of the 2002 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, sparking a six-year pro career.
