Miami native Stevenson returning home, will transfer to Hurricanes

- South Florida Sun Sentinel

The Miami Hurricanes missed out on Tyrique Stevenson when he was a recruit out of Miami Southridge High in the 2019 class.

After picking Georgia over UM back then, two years later he’s coming home.

Stevenson, a sophomore, announced Saturday that he will transfer to the Hurricanes after entering the NCAA’s transfer portal Monday night.

“Having to make another big life changing decision did not come easy but I feel confident that I am making the best decision for my future and my family,” Stevenson said in a statement posted on his social media accounts. “I’m excited to announce that I will be completing my academic and athletic career at the University of Miami.”

In 10 games with the Bulldogs in 2020, Stevenson collected 34 tackles, one for a loss, and added five pass deflections.

As a freshman in 2019, Stevenson had 13 tackles, a sack and five pass deflections in nine games played. He has yet to record an interception in his college career.

Stevenson’s addition should boost a Miami cornerback unit that is thin heading into the 2021 season.

The Hurricanes should return juniors DJ Ivey and Al Blades Jr., sophomore Te’Cory Couch and freshmen Isaiah Dunson and Marcus Clarke. However, Blades will be recovering from myocarditis, which cut his season short, and UM only added one cornerback recruit in the early signing period: Fort Myers Bishop Verot’s Malik Curtis.

Edge rusher Deandre Johnson, another Southridge alum, previously transferred to UM.
