Pink Floyd drummer to bring pre‘Dark Side’ songs to Miami Beach

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who formed the classic-rock supergroup Saucerful of Secrets in May, will bring his 25-date U.S. tour to the Fillmore Miami Beach on March 27.

But don’t expect performances of “Comfortably Numb,” “Welcome to the Machine” or anything from “Dark Side of the Moon,” Pink Floyd’s enduring prog-rock masterpiece.

Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets will instead plunge into the band’s early, pre“Dark Side” catalog, covering the band’s first seven albums (1967-1972) of sonic experimentation. The tour will kick off March 12 in Vancouver and conclude April 22 in Washington, D.C.

Touted as Mason’s first stateside shows since Pink Floyd’s 1994 “Division Bell” Tour, the concerts unite Mason with longtime Pink Floyd touring bassist Guy Pratt, Spandau Ballet guitarist Gary Kemp, keyboardist Dom Beken and guitarist Lee Harris. The supergroup came together after Mason’s friends nudged him to perform live music again.

Much of the show will feature Syd Barrett-era Floyd, which includes

1967’s “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (“See Emily Play,” “Interstellar Overdrive”) and 1968’s “Saucerful of Secrets” (“Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun”). The set list will also cycle deep cuts from 1969’s “More” through 1972’s “Obscured by Clouds.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone in July about forming the supergroup, Mason said Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and band co-founder Roger Waters both gave their blessings to the project. “I thought it would be good manners, and they were both supportive,” Mason said. “Roger even said he would come down and sing one of the songs one night. Playing the early Pink Floyd stuff doesn’t impinge on what Roger or David do. I could find myself a comfortable niche and do it for the sheer joy.”
