The sixth season Miami Hurricanes defensive end Scott Patchan appealed for will be played somewhere else.

Patchan announced Saturday afternoon that he has entered the NCAA’s transfer portal.

“I have decided to enter the transfer portal,” Patchan said on Twitter accompanied by a picture of him in Miami’s Turnover Chain from last season. “It has always been my dream to play at the University of Miami. I will cherish the relationships fostered with my teammates, coaches and others. I will be a Cane for life. I now look forward to new challenges. God bless.”

The move out for Patchan comes within a week of Temple grad transfer defensive end Quincy Roche announcing he will play his final season with the Hurricanes. Roche had

13 sacks a year ago for the Owls and, with returning redshirt sophomore Greg Rousseau, figures to form one of college football’s top pass-rushing tandems.

Rousseau had 15 1⁄2 sacks last season.

Playing in 13 games and starting six, Patchan had 33 tackles, including six for a loss, and 2 1⁄2 sacks in what was originally his redshirt senior season but became a redshirt junior year in 2019 after getting the extra season of eligibility.

He debuted UM’s third edition of the Turnover Chain when he wore it after a fumble recovery in the Hurricanes’ opener against Florida in Orlando following a fumble recovery.

A starter at the beginning of the season for the first time at Miami, he was surpassed by Rousseau by midseason to start opposite of Jonathan Garvin. Garvin, a junior last season, and redshirt senior Trevon Hill are both bound for the NFL draft this offseason.

Early in his UM career, Patchan battled two seasonending knee injuries and even made a position switch to tight end at one point before returning to defensive end.

Returning at defensive end, Miami still has Jahfari Harvey, Jaelan Phillips and Cameron Williams.

Harvey, a freshman last season, played in the Hurricanes’ Independence Bowl loss to Louisiana Tech as both Garvin and Hill sat out the season-ending game on Dec. 26.

Phillips, a former fivestar recruit who transferred in from UCLA last offseason, will be eligible to play as a redshirt junior in

2020 after sitting out the

2019 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Williams is a redshirt freshman who redshirted his first college season out of Chaminade-Madonna High for academic reasons.

In the spring, the Hurricanes also have true freshman early enrollee Chantz Williams, an Under Armour All-American out of Oakleaf High just outside of Jacksonville who is recovering from an arm injury.

Another pair of defensive ends who are signed in Miami’s 2020 recruiting class but are set to enroll after the spring are Elijah Roberts out of Miami Columbus High, who has the potential to grow into a defensive tackle, and Quentin Williams from Charlotte.

Other Hurricanes to have announced they’re transferring since the end of the season include quarterback Jarren Williams, running back Lorenzo Lingard (to Florida), fullback Realus George (Independence C.C.), tight end Brian Polendey, defensive tackle Tyreic Martin and kicker Bubba Baxa.

In addition to Roche, Miami has picked up star Houston quarterback D’Eriq King as a grad transfer and FIU kicker Jose Borregales.
