Giants’ Barkley has ACL surgery

Giants running back SaquonBark­ley has had surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.

Giants coach Joe Judge confirmed the surgery on Saturday without giving specifics.

Judge said Ronnie Barnes, the team’s senior vice president of medical services and head trainer, spoke with the surgeon in Los Angeles and said the procedure seeminglyw­entwell.

Barkley, the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of theYear, was injured against the Bears in the second game of the season when he was tackled at the end of a run.

He has been waiting for the swelling in the knee to go down before having the surgery.

“He seems to be in good spirits and we look forward to getting him back on this side of the country,” Judge said.

The Giants have struggled this season, posting a 1-6 record in Judge’s first season as coach.

Barkley’s mother, Tonya Johnson, posted a tweet saying that the surgery was a success.

The second pick overall in ’18, Barkley ran for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 91 passes for 721 yards and four TDs.

He was limited to 1,003 yards rushing and 52 catches last season, whenhemiss­ed three games and was slowed by an ankle injury. The former Penn State star had 19 carries for 34 yards before being hurt this season.

■ The Cowboys declared quarterbac­k AndyDalton out Saturday for their gamein Philadelph­ia because of a concussion, clearing the way for rookie Ben DiNucci’s first start. DiNucci will appear in prime time Sunday night against the Eagles (2-4-1) in his home state of Pennsylvan­ia. The former Pitt quarterbac­k finished his college career at James Madison, leading that school to the FCS championsh­ip game before getting drafted in the seventh round by Dallas. ... The Patriots have ruled cornerback Stephon Gilmore out for Sunday’s road game against the Bills due to a knee injury. ... The NFL has suspended kicker Aldrick Rosas for four games as punishment for violating the league’s code of conduct policy. ... The 49ers announced they’ve activated running back Tevin Coleman and cornerback K’Waun Williams off of injured reserve and both will be available to play against the Seahawks on Sunday.

Tennis: Wimbledon champion Simona Halep has tested positive for COVID-19 and said Saturday that she is “recovering well frommild symptoms.”

The29-year-oldHalep, currently ranked No. 2 in the world, had skipped the U.S. Open due to fears of catching the coronaviru­s.

She said in August that she preferred to stay and train in Europe.

The Romanian player announced her test result Saturday.

“I wanted to let you know that I tested positive for COVID-19. I am self-isolating at home and am recovering­well from mild symptoms. I feel good we will get through this together,” Halep said on Twitter.

Halep, a former top-ranked player, won Wimbledon in 2019 and the French Open in 2018. Wimbledonw­as canceled this year because of the pandemic.
