Finally back, Lawrence lifts Clemson

Trevor Lawrence threwfor 403 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in fiveweeks— and likely last one at Death Valley — as Clemson throttled visiting Pittsburgh 52-17 on Saturday.

Lawrence hadn’t seen the field on game day since beating Syracuse on Oct. 24. He tested positive for the coronavirus the following week and missed Clemson’s next two games, including its only loss this season — a 47-40 double OT defeat atNotreDame.

A healthy, eager Lawrence expected to play lastweek, but a positive test from a Clemson offensive lineman on the Friday before the game led to a postponement at Florida State just hours before kickoff.

Lawrence, a 6-foot-6 junior with a powerful arm, deft touch and flowing hair, was as crisp as ever in leading Clemson, No. 3 in the College Football Playoff ranking, a step closer to the league championship game and a likely rematch with the second-ranked Fighting Irish.

The Tigers are 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the ACC.

Buckeyes in limbo: Ohio State officials say they’re unsure when the team can practice again, let alone play next week at Michigan State, after an outbreak of COVID-19 put the fourth-ranked Buckeyes’ Big Ten title hopes in danger.

“I have no clue what this afternoon or tomorrow will bring or next week will bring,” ADGene Smith said Saturday.

Three more college football games across the country were canceled or postponed Saturday, including Florida State hosting Virginia. For the second straight week, the Seminoles had their home game called off hours before kickoff and after their opponent had already traveled to Tallahassee, Florida.

Lastweek the issuewas Clemson and Florida State not agreeing on whether the game should be played after a Tigers player who was positive for COVID-19 traveled with the team to Florida.

This week, one positive test for a Florida State player returned Saturday morning led to contact tracing that left the Seminoles with only 44 scholarship players.

Ohio State canceled its Saturday game at Illinois on Friday night. Across college football, 19 of the 58 games originally scheduled for this week were called off because ofCOVID-19 issues.

TheBuckeyes’ disruption could be the most significant, impacting the Big Ten and national championship race.

If Ohio State (4-0) can’t play its final two regular-season games itwould likely not reach the minimum number (six) required to be eligible for the Big Ten championship game. The Buckeyes had an earlier game canceled because of a COVID outbreak atMaryland.

Trask, Gators keep rolling: Florida’s Kyle-to-Kyle connection returned in a big way after a two-week hiatus and put the sixth-ranked Gators on the verge of the SEC championship game.

Kyle Trask found Kyle Pitts for three TDs, including a 56-yarder in which the star tight end ran away from a cornerback, and Florida overcame a sluggish start to beatKentucky 34-10 on Saturday in the Swamp.

It was Pitts’ first game since suffering a concussion and breaking his nose on a vicious hit againstGeorgia.

Trask has 34 TD passes this season, moving him past 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow and into a tie for third on the school’s single-season list. Only Danny Wuerffel (39 in 1996, 35 in 1995) is ahead of him. RexGrossmanalso threw 34 in 2001.

Trask did break one of Wuerffel’s records Saturday. He became the first player in school history with at least three TD passes in eight consecutive games.

The Gators (7-1) can clinch the SEC Eastwith awin at Tennessee nextweek.
