Miramar mayor takes families on Walmart shopping spree

- By Kari Barnett

Shopping during the holiday season may seem like a daunting task, but it’s a much different experience when you’re given $100 and accompanied by the mayor.

Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam recently had a holiday shopping spree for 45 youth whose families are in financial need due to the pandemic. The city’s church’s selected families to take part with each child or teen bringing along an adult. They could purchase up to $100 in items from the Walmart at 1800 S. University Drive with Messam helping them along the way during the two-and-a-half-hour event on Dec. 19.

Everyone followed CDC guidelines by wearing masks and social distancing as they visited the store. Families filled their carts with everything from toys and bikes to groceries with Messam escorting them through the checkout line and paying at the register.
