Gary Lee Shapiro, M.D., loving husband, doctor, and father, passed away on January 20 at age 70. Gary was born on December 29, 1950 and was raised in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from The University School in 1968 and Princeton University in 1972. He received his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1976 and had residencie­s at Boston University School of Medicine and Stanford University. Gary is survived by his loving wife Barryanne (Covell) Shapiro and her son Liam Dacey, his sister Lora Guyuron (Bahman, Glen, Grant, and Greg), his sister-in-law Elizabeth Shapiro (Alex and Victoria) and his children Whitney Shapiro (Jim Behot), Leigh Williamson (Brian, Tenley, Lexi), and Brett Shapiro (Kristen O’Neil).

Gary spent his career as a dedicated gastroente­rologist at Cape Cod Healthcare in Hyannis, MA. A modest man, he cared deeply for his patients during the many decades of his esteemed career and loved spending time golfing with his colleagues and friends. Gary also had multiple pet iguanas and was passionate about being in nature and catching frogs. He loved butterflie­s.

Gary gave back to this world more than he received. And that was fine with him.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Harrison and Ellin Shapiro and his brother Dale Shapiro. At his request, there will be a private funeral service. In remembranc­e of Gary’s life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made in his honor to the Cape Cod Needy Fund, P.O Box 804, Hyannis, MA, 02601. “Go Tigers!”
