Miramar providing 100 students with internet service

The city of Miramar has teamed up with Comcast to provide 100 low-income students with internet service through the end of the school year.

As part of Comcast’s Internet Essentials Partnershi­p Program, Miramar Mayor Wayne

Messam’s office will cover the costs for each household’s Internet Essentials service for six months, ensuring the students can complete the school year.

Internet Essentials from Comcast provides internet services for $9.95 a month for qualified households.

So far, the city of Miramar has selected six students to receive the service. To apply, visit apply.internetes­sentials. com.

“Students absolutely have to have this essential service in order to succeed during this extraordin­arily challengin­g time,” Messam said in a statement. “My office is committed to doing whatever we can to support families adversely affected by the pandemic and ensure students continue to learn.”

In addition to providing internet service, the program also gives qualifying students the option to purchase a low-cost internet-ready computer along with multiple resources to access free digital skills training.

Since 2011, Internet Essentials has connected over 8 million low-income households to its services, according to Comcast.
