Florida State coach Mike Norvell said redshirt freshman quarterback Chubba Purdy won’t participate in the remainder of spring camp.

Purdy appeared in three games last season, including one start against NC State, before having to undergo season-ending surgery on a broken collarbone in November. He had had surgery in August for the injury but was forced to go under the knife again in order to have the hardware previously inserted into his collarbone removed after it began causing irritation and inflammation.

“We made a decision as he’s been going through his rehabilitation process,” Norvell said following practice Thursday. “He’s had a really good first four practices and we’re going to focus the rest of spring with him on his rehab process and getting back to 100% as we get going into the summer program. … His focus for the rest of the spring is going to be on his rehabilitation program and we’re going to continue to work away on that with him.”

FSU’s quarterback competition was a point of focus this offseason with the addition of graduate transfer McKenzie Milton along with the return of Jordan Travis, Tate Rodemaker and Purdy. Travis started six games last season, with Rodemaker and Purdy earning spot starts as well.

Purdy was 27 of 53 for 219 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

The four-star prospect signed with FSU as part of its 2020 recruiting class along with Rodemaker. He’s the younger brother of Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy.
