Medical
Dr. Dennis A. Hart is the new chief of pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In addition, he will lead the Pediatric Rehabilitation Center.
The University of Miami Health System announced two new department chairs. Glenn Flores, M.D., FAAP is the new chair of the Department of Pediatrics, from University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Flores will also serve as senior associated dean for child health, the George E. Batchelor Endowed Chair in Child Health, and physician-inchief at Holtz Children’s Hospital at UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Francis Hornicek M.D., Ph.D., an orthopaedic oncologist, is the new chair of the Department of Orthopaedics, from Harvard Medical School where he was chief of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Service. Hornicek will also serve as the director of orthopaedic oncology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
VIKAND Solutions LLC appointed Nick Kuchova as senior adviser-global government affairs. VIKAND provides global medical and public health service solutions to the entire maritime industry, including cruise, yacht, superyacht, commercial shipping, fishing, and energy sectors, supporting crew with medical and mental wellness needs supported by experienced onboard and onshore medical staffs.

Novotel Miami Brickell hotel announced that Marina Temino has been named director of sales and marketing.
Public safety
Rebecca Torres has been promoted to executive director of the Palm Beach Police & Fire Foundation. For more than a year, Torres has worked as the foundation’s development director. Torres’ experience includes working as promotions and marketing director at CBS Radio in Tampa. In 2014, she joined ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s in Tampa as a bilingual regional development representative, and in 2016, moved to Miami to become one of its regional event specialists.
Real estate
NAI Miami, part of a leading global commercial real estate brokerage firm, announced the admission of Jeff Buell, Joseph Gallaher, Jackie Larkin and Timothy Merriman Jr. as its newest shareholders.
The Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound Council of the Miami Association of Realtors presented one of its highest honors, the 2020 Broker of the Year Award, to Joan Thomson of Waterfront Properties and Club Communities. Thomson also received recognition as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Luxury Real Estate network. She began her career in 1969.
Miami’s CMC Group luxury developer named Christine Martinez de Castro as its director of sales and marketing. Christine brings over 20 years of experience with sales, marketing, and public relations to CMC Group. Martinez de Castro began her career with Ketchum Public Relations before joining Delta Air Lines’ Corporate Communications management team. Most recently, Martinez de Castro was the director of marketing for the premium cigar manufacturer Gurkha Cigars.

Goodwill South Florida announced the appointment of Tammy Klein, founder and owner of Klein HR Solutions, to its board of directors.
Politics
Rolando Chang Barrero has been re-elected for the third term as president of The Palm Beach County Democratic Hispanic chapter of the Florida Caucus. Commissioner Joaquin Almazan was re-elected for the second time and will remain as vice president. Peter Camacho is treasurer, and Maria Alejandra Mercado was elected as the new secretary of the chapter.

John Knox Village Foundation
of Florida announced the appointment of its new Executive Director, Mark Dobosz. The foundation also announced new officers for its board of directors: President, Kit Frazer; Vice President, Dick Mellett; Secretary, Sondra St. Martin; and Treasurer, Tom McDowell. Also, the following individuals will serve an additional term on the board of directors: Darryl Hinkle, Lucinda Ortigao and Suzanne Higgins.
Literary
Former Broward County Library Director Kelvin Watson was honored with the 2021 E. Monroe Library Adult Services Award, presented by the Reference and User Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, in recognition of Watson’s dedication in implementing new and innovative ways for Broward County Library to welcome non-traditional users to become lifelong library customers. Watson left Broward County in February 2021 to become executive director of Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.
The West Palm Beach Library Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds for Mandel Public Library programs, appointed Dianne Bernstein, a board member since June 2016, as its new board chair. The foundation also added new board members including: philanthropist Kim Bepler, former School District Assistant Superintendent
Dr. Mary Ann DuPont, mediation and arbitration professional Steven Mayans, Levenger Chief Executive Officer Margaret Moraskie, and NCCI Executive Director of Strategy and Communications Robert Snyder.
Aviation
The National Park Service announced that Big Cypress National Preserve Pilot Fred Goodwin was awarded the 2020 National Park Service Wright Brothers National Aviation Safety Award. The award is presented to individuals or groups who proactively promote an open-minded attitude in the prevention of aviation mishaps and accidents, work diligently to correct and improve aviation safety deficiencies, and communicate the actions and results to others. Goodwin has served as the park service’s fleet pilot in Big Cypress National Preserve since 2011. He dedicates his time and energy to both Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park in a variety of operations. Throughout 2020, Goodwin identified several aviation safety concerns, and through SAFECOM’s, a tool used to identify, document, track, and correct safety related issues, was able to implement and ensure corrective actions were completed.
The Southeast chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives named Rufus A. James, Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport manager, as the 2021
Airport Professional of the Year, during the closing ceremony of the SEC-AAAE’s annual Southeast chapter Conference held in Savannah, Ga. The SEC-AAAE selects the Airport Professional of the Year based on professional accomplishments and contributions to the aviation industry.
Education
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Carlos Trujillo to the Florida International University Board of Trustees. Trujillo is the former United States Ambassador to the Organization of American States.
Also, DeSantis announced the appointment of Ismare Monreal to the Miami Dade College District Board of Trustees. Monreal is the acting vice president and dean of students at Johnson and Wales University.
Government
West Palm Beach Mayor Keith A. James appointed Rebecca DeLaRosa as chief of staff and economic development director for the City of West Palm Beach. DeLaRosa has more than 20 years of experience in legislative and government affairs and, most recently, worked as legislative affairs director for Palm Beach County.
