Florida registered 23,903 new cases and 93 additional deaths Friday, posting another one-day record for infections.

For the second straight day, Florida posted a one-day record for COVID cases, according to a federal report released Saturday, as the state’s hospitals continued to fill with people fighting the disease.

The state registered 23,903 new cases and 93 additional deaths Friday, according to an update posted Saturday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This was the third time in eight days that Florida has broken its previous record for COVID cases detected in a single day.

The total number of cases in Florida since the pandemic began stood at more than 2.7 million.

The seven-day average for reported COVID deaths in Florida went from 90 to 88, but the deaths numbers haven’t been that high since March 12.

The seven-day average for daily infections swelled to 19,250, and, for the fifth day in a row, that broke a state record.

In addition, Broward County’s hospitals admitted the most COVID patients of any county in the country over the past seven days — 1,470 patients, according to a report released by the White House.

The Palm Beach County school district announced Saturday that masks will be required for all students in the Palm Beach County School District, unless the student opts out with a note from a parent.

“I must make decisions that safeguard the health and wellbeing of our students and staff,” Superintendent Michael Burke wrote in a statement posted on the district’s web site.

“In determining how best to accomplish that, I have consulted with members of the local and national medical community, I have considered the guidance from local pediatricians who are extremely concerned about the health of our children, and I have discussed this critical decision with our School Board Members

The test positivity rate for the week rose from 18.1% to 18.9%, according to the weekly report that was released Friday by the Florida Department of Health.

Although this does not represent a large increase, it’s trending in the wrong direction for a state already struggling with the highest case totals in the United States.
