Sans Daniels, Georgia wins

-

Stetson Bennett tied a school record with five touchdown passes filling in for injured starter JT Daniels, leading No. 2 Georgia to a 56-7 rout of UAB on Saturday.

Bennett, who started five games last season, completed his first six passes — four of them going all the way to the end zone for the Bulldogs (2-0), who didn’t show any signs of a letdown after a 10-3 victory over Clemson despite the absence of their No. 1 quarterback.

Daniels did not start because of an oblique injury.

Bennett got off to a blistering start, throwing a pair of touchdown passes in the first five minutes to stake Georgia to a 14-0 lead.

Daniels’ injury was not believed to be serious, but it did cause him enough discomfort that the Bulldogs decided to take no chances against the Blazers, who were a 25 ½-point underdog.

In the season-opening victory over Clemson, Daniels completed 22 of 30 passes for 135 yards with an interception. Neither team scored an offensive touchdown in Georgia’s 10-3 victory, which was decided by an interception return for a touchdown.

Aggies escape with win over old rivals: Backup quarterback Zach Calzada threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Spiller with 2:41 remaining and fifthranked Texas A&M escaped Empower Field at Mile High with a 10-7 win over Colorado in Denver.

Spiller’s TD gave the Aggies (2-0) their first lead on a day in which they lost freshman QB Haynes King to a lower right leg injury and eight of their first nine drives were three-and-outs.

Colorado’s hopes of an upset over the

17-point favorite Aggies ended when Brendon Lewis’ pass to Dimitri Stanley on fourth-and-13 from his 22 covered just

12 yards.

The Aggies (2-0), whose 10-game winning streak is second-longest in the nation to Alabama, took over with 1:39 left and ran out the clock on the Buffs

(1-1), who managed just one first down after taking a 7-3 halftime lead.

The former Big 12 adversaries hadn’t played each other since 2009 before the Aggies bolted to the SEC and the Buffs headed to the Pac-12.

Troubles off field, none on field: Florida cornerback Jaydon Hill, sidelined this season because of a torn knee ligament, was charged with breaking into a car, stealing a debit card and making $1,700 in unauthorized purchases.

According to Alachua County court records, Hill agreed last month to deferred prosecution on third-degree felony charges for unarmed burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, grand theft larceny of more than $750 and less than

$5,000, and fraudulent and illegal use of credit cards.

Hill will have the felonies dropped from his record if he completes 50 hours of community service, reimburses

$1,753.43 to Mid-Florida Credit Union, pays $200 in prosecution fees and does not violate any federal, state, county or municipal ordinances for a year.

WUFT-TV first reported Hill’s legal troubles Saturday.

According to court records, Hill was arrested June 2 after police used IP address logs and surveillance footage to link him to the stolen debit card.

On the field, No. 13 Florida tuned up for the start of SEC play with a 42-20 rout of overmatched South Florida that did little to answer the question of whether starter Emory Jones or backup Anthony Richardson is best suited to run the Gators offense.

Jones and Richardson shared playing time for the second straight week, with each having his way in the opening half against a USF defense that allowed touchdowns on five consecutive possessions after producing a three-and-out to start the game.

Jones threw a 35-yard TD pass to Xzavier Henderson and scored on a

33-yard run on the way to a 35-3 halftime lead before a crowd of 66,646 at Raymond James Stadium.

Richardson, meanwhile, took an astounding passer rating of 917.2 into the fourth quarter after completing his first two attempts to Jacob Copeland on scoring plays of 75 and 41 yards before halftime.

Two Tide corners benched: Alabama cornerbacks Josh Jobe and Jalyn Armour-Davis didn’t start the game with Mercer.

Jobe was spotted in street clothes for the top-ranked Crimson Tide’s home debut against the FCS team. It wasn’t clear why the pair weren’t available.

Neither went through pre-game warmups.

Freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry, one of Alabama’s top recruits in the latest class, started opposite junior Marcus Banks.

An Alabama spokesman said coach Nick Saban would address their status after the game.

No sweat for Tigers: Demetris Robertson scored three touchdowns and Jarquez Hunter rushed for 147 yards as No. 25 Auburn raced past FCS program Alabama State 62-0.
