Hurricanes miss out on commitment from four-star TE

- By Khobi Price

The Miami Hurricanes missed out on getting the pledge from one of their top targets in the 2022 recruiting class, as Jaleel Skinner committed to Alabama over UM — and several other schools — Friday afternoon.

Skinner, who’s ranked as the No. 1 tight end prospect in the 2022 class according to 247Sports Composite score, announced his intention to play for the Crimson Tide on Friday on CBSSports HQ.

The Hurricanes, along with Alabama, were among Skinner’s top six schools, including Texas, Florida, Florida State and Clemson.

Miami (June 25) was among Skinner’s five official visits over the summer, along with the Gators, Crimson Tide, Longhorns and Seminoles.

Skinner, who was ranked as the No. 74 player in the nation according to

247Sports Composite score, had an unofficial visit with the Hurricanes during their

30-28 loss to Virginia on Sept. 30.

Unofficial visits are paid for entirely by the student-athlete and their family, while official visits are paid for by the college they’re visiting.

Skinner, who’s listed at

6-foot-5 and 210 pounds, started his high school career off at Greer High School in South Carolina before transferring IMG Academy in Bradenton for his senior season.

Miami’s 2022 recruiting class remains ranked at No. 44 nationally and No. 8 in the ACC by 247Sports after Skinner’s commitment to the Crimson Tide, with the Hurricanes having nine pledges for the class so far, including six from four-star prospects.

UM (2-3, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) isn’t expected to know the decision from one of its top targets for a while, with Monsignor Pace five-star defensive end Shemar Stewart, who’s ranked as the No. 8 high school senior in the nation and top player in Florida, not expected to announce his commitment until National Signing Day on Feb. 2.

It isn’t yet known when Riverside (Jacksonville) five-star cornerback Jaheim Singletary will announce his commitment after he decommitted from Ohio State in August. Miami’s expected to be one of Singletary’s top schools, along with Georgia, Florida, Florida State and Michigan, according to 247Sports.

Miami Central four-star linebacker Wesley Bissainthe, Dillard four-star defensive end Nyjalik Kelly and four-star defensive lineman Anthony Lucas out of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz. are other top UM targets whose commitment dates aren’t known.
