UM inducting 10 new members into sports hall of fame

The University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame will induct 10 new members as part of its 2022 class.

Two football players — Cleveland Gary and D.J. Williams — are among the inductees, along with Jeff Alkire (baseball), T’erea Brown (track), Lane Carico (volleyball), Conny Falk (tennis), Tim Harris (track), Shenise Johnson (basketball), Jack McClinton (basketball) and Brittany Viola (diving).

The date and location of the 53rd induction banquet in the spring will be announced at a later time. The inductees will be introduced in an on-field ceremony at the end of the first quarter of the Miami-Georgia Tech game on Nov. 6 at Hard Rock Stadium.

“We are honored to induct this outstandin­g class of athletes into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame,” hall president Mead McCabe said in a statement. “We will celebrate these athletes and their amazing accomplish­ments at our Induction Banquet in the Spring of 2022, and we invite all Canes Fans to join us in welcoming the Class of

2022.”

After transferri­ng to Miami from Georgia during his sophomore year, Gary

(1986-1988) was part of the

1987 national championsh­ip team and was recognized as a First Team All-American in 1988 after he led UM in receptions (57) and rushing yards (480). Gary was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in first round of the

1989 NFL draft, playing five years in the NFL.

Williams (2000-03), who joined Miami as a fullback, switched positions and was used as a linebacker on the

2001 national championsh­ip team. He was named a Butkus Award semifinali­st in 2002 after recording 108 tackles. He was taken in the first round of the 2004 draft by the Denver Broncos and played 11 seasons in the NFL.

Alkire (1989-1992), who played under Ron Fraser, was named a consensus All-American in 1992 after leading Miami to the College World Series. He went 14-3 with a 2.62 ERA during the

1992 season. Alkire finished his college career with 32 wins, the ninth-most in school history.

Brown (2007-2011), a six-time All American, won the 2011 NCAA National Championsh­ip in the

400-meter Hurdles. She was named the South Region Track Performer of the Year by the US Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Associatio­n in 2011.

Carico (2008-2011) was the first player in program history to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs. She was named an honorable mention All-American twice, All-ACC four times and All-East Region First Team four times.

After originally coming to Miami on vacation from Sweden, Falk (1989-1991) joined the team on scholarshi­p and became one of the winningest players in program history. In 1991, he became the first Hurricane, male or female, to be ranked No. 1 in the country.

Harris (2004-2008) was a four-time NCAA All-American in the 800-meters and six-time ACC champion. He still holds UM’s indoor record in the 800-meters.

Johnson (2008-2012) ranks No. 1 in steals (401), No. 2 in rebounding (1,020), No. 3 in scoring (2,262) and No. 4 in assists (556) in program history. She is currently an assistant coach on coach Katie Meier’s staff.

McClinton (2006-2009) ranks first in ACC history in 3-point percentage (44 percent) and second in free-throw percentage (90 percent). He’s No. 7 in UM history in points (1,702) and holds the program record for most points scored (38) in an NCAA Tournament game.

Viola (2007-2011) was a two-time national champion in diving, winning the NCAA title in Platform diving in 2008 and 2011.

With the additions, the UM Sports Hall of Fame will have 344 members.
