Sylvia (Newman) Pomerantz, 97, of Delray Beach, FL passed away peacefully on Friday, October 8, at Sonata Senior Living of Delray Beach.

Sylvia was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of Nathan and Anna Newman. She met her husband Irving in Miami Beach in 1945 while she was on vacation and he

was recovering from a war injury. They were married later that year. While raising three children and running a household, Sylvia enrolled in Brooklyn College, taking classes in the evening. She graduated ten years later in the same class as her daughter Eileen. She went on to teach High School Home Economics, a career that was highlighte­d by being named 1983 Staten Island Teacher of the Year. After retiring, Sylvia and Irving resettled in Florida, first in Miami Beach, then Century Village in Deerfield Beach in 1995. A year after Irving died in 2004, Sylvia, at age 81, embarked on a 3 month around the world adventure on the QE II. She spent the next decade traveling, making friends, and attending to family. At age 90, she studied for and became a Bat Mitzvah, a celebratio­n attended by dozens of friends and family members. Shortly after, she moved to the Horizon Club in Deerfield Beach.

Sylvia was predecease­d by her husband Irving and sister Beverly. She is survived by daughter Eileen Shaffer, husband Tom, and grandchild­ren Anna and Buckley; son Roy Pomerantz, wife Joanne, and grandchild­ren Brian, Elizabeth and Karen; son Daniel Pomerantz, wife Laurie and grandson Adam; as well as three greatgrand­children, Landon, Paisley and Leon; and sister Jean Horowitz and husband Roy.

Funeral Services were held at Beth Moses Cemetery in Farmingdal­e, Long Island, NY.
