The federal government has widened its rules for who is eligible for a COVID vaccine booster. To get your third shot you will need to make an appointment at most locations and bring your vaccine card.

Although pharmacies and hospitals may not ask for proof whether you meet the criteria, the government is asking everyone follow the rules. Eligible Pfizer and Moderna patients may get their booster six months after completing the initial series. Johnson & Johnson patients are eligible for their booster two months after their first dose. If you meet this Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria, it’s recommended you get a booster six months after your second dose: People 65 and older. Nursing home residents. People ages 50 to 64 who have underlying health problems, such as diabetes or obesity.

People 18 to 49 who have chronic health problems.

Frontline workers such as health care workers, teachers and others whose jobs put them at risk such as grocery store employees, nursing home staff and other essential workers.

People who have moderately of severely compromised immune systems. The CDC recommends that people in this category get the booster at least 28 days after receiving their second shot of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, and the third shot (booster) should be the same brand as the first two.

Many hospital systems, as well as major retail outlets, are accepting appointments or walk-in recipients to get the booster vaccines. The shots come at no cost to the customer. Here’s where you can find the booster vaccines:
