Mathieu apologizes to KC fans for comment

Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu apologized Saturday for a tweet calling his team’s supporters “one of the most toxic fan bases in all of sports” amid a disappointing 3-4 start for the two-time defending AFC champions.

The All-Pro safety, who is in the final year of his contract with the Chiefs, was replying to a tweet from teammate Anthony Hitchens on Friday. The linebacker had pointed out that the Chiefs had been to three AFC title games, two Super Bowls and delivered the club’s first championship in 50 years in his three years with the club.

“Y’all fans will never be satisfied,” Hitchens concluded. “It’s sad!”

Mathieu said after Saturday’s practice that his tweet was “a mistake” and that he “shouldn’t have used those words.” He also said that he didn’t want to be a distraction ahead of Monday night’s game against the Giants.

“Obviously, I shouldn’t have used those choices of words. I think I’m man enough to admit that and really own that.” Mathieu said.

Golf: Taylor Pendrith’s big game is working just fine on the PGA Tour’s shortest course, giving the Canadian a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Pendrith ran off four straight birdies around the turn at Port Royal, and then picked up two more birdies late in his round Saturday for a 6-under 65.

NHL: Penguins star Sidney Crosby made his season debut Saturday night when the Penguins hosted the Devils. Crosby, 34, underwent left wrist surgery on Sept. 8 and estimated he would miss “at least” six weeks. Saturday night’s game is a little over seven weeks since the procedure.

UFC: Glover Teixeira stopped Jan Błachowicz by submission in the second round at UFC 267 on Saturday, with the 42-year-old Brazilian veteran claiming Błachowicz’s light heavyweight belt and becoming the oldest first-time champion in UFC history.
