Arctic air will push down area temps
South Florida expected to hit low 40s this weekend
Grab your blankets and crank up the heat, South Florida.
The coldest temperatures of the season are expected to push into the region late this weekend, meaning Broward and Palm Beach residents could see temperatures in the lows 40s, and wind chills, in the most extreme realistic cases, in the mid 30s.
A dip in the jet stream is being followed by a blast of arctic air, and it’s making its way across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic now. Its presence will be felt in Broward and Palm Beach counties.
“The potential cold temperatures that we’ll be seeing [Sunday] into Monday will be coming in behind this frontal passage that we’re seeing [Saturday],” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ana Torres-Vazquez.
“And for our area the coldest could potentially be in the overnight period from Sunday to Monday.”
Expect temperatures in the low 40s to low 50s throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties Sunday night.
The “feels like” temperatures could be as low as 35 degrees in interior parts of Palm Beach County and in the mid-40s closer to the coast, Torres Vazquez said.
Farther north in Hendry and Glades counties there’s a small risk of frost or a freeze warning.
The cold temperatures will be accompanied by dry air, meaning there’s a minimal rain chance Sunday and Monday.
Saturday’s afternoon forecast could see some showers along the front as it dips down into South Florida, but it would be limited.
“Some of the [rain] ingredients are there, but not all of them,” Torres-Vazquez said.
Sunday could feature a high risk of rip currents for Broward and West Palm Beach and that threat could last into Tuesday, and Sunday could also feature an elevated risk of high surf in Palm Beach.
Whatever the case, it’s going to get chilly, likely too chilly to enjoy the beach.
