Hurricanes to open at Hall of Fame tournament

- By Adam Lichtenstein

The Miami Hurricanes’ 2022-23 basketball campaign will start in Connecticut at the 2022 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament, UM announced.

Providence, Maryland and Saint Louis are the other three teams in the tournament. The Hurricanes open their season against Providence on Nov. 19 and will face one of the other two teams on Nov. 20. The tournament will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“We are very much looking forward to playing in this excellent tournament,” Miami coach Jim Larrañaga said. “The field includes four talented teams and the venue is superb. We hope to see many of our fans from the Northeast in attendance to watch us play two competitive games.”

Miami is 15-16 all-time against Providence and last faced the Friars on Dec. 22,

2014. Larrañaga is a Providence alumnus. The Hurricanes had the best postseason run in program history last season, reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. Miami fell to eventual national champion Kansas.

However, the Hurricanes will have a noticeably different roster when the

2022-23 season begins. Guards Kameron McGusty and Charlie Moore, as well as forward Sam Waardenburg, are gone after playing their final seasons of eligibility. Guard Isaiah Wong may return, but he is hoping to be selected in this summer’s NBA draft.

Miami signed four high school players: four-star forward AJ Casey, four-star center Favour Aire and three-star forwards Danilo Jovanovich and Christian Watson. They also added transfers Nijel Pack, a guard from Kansas State, and Norchad Omier, a forward from Arkansas State.
