Miami Central wide receiver Lamar Seymore has been verbally committed to the Miami Hurricanes for over two years, but the UCF Knights are trying to change that.

Seymore made the short trip north last weekend to the Orlando school for an official visit and said he liked what he saw.

“It was amazing,” Seymore said. “My favorite part was probably hanging out with the coaches and football players.”

The 6-foot, 170-pound receiver from South Florida spent the weekend with a familiar face as his player host — UCF senior wideout Amari Johnson, who also grew up in Miami.

“I know him well,” Seymore said. “He played at Carol City. He was basically just telling me how they operate, stuff like that.”

In addition to spending time with Johnson, Seymore reunited with UCF receivers coach Grant Heard.

Although Heard is new to UCF, having spent five years at Indiana University before being hired by Gus Malzahn in March, Seymore was previously recruited by the assistant coach.

“I knew him when he was at Indiana,” Seymore said. “He used to come to my school and talk to me all the time. He offered me up there too.”

Seymore knows what it takes to win big games. He’s been part of a Miami Central squad that’s won three straight Florida state championships — two in the Class 6A and this past year in the 5A classification.

As a junior, Seymore caught 26 passes for 550 yards and 7 touchdowns helping his team capture yet another state title.

This is why Heard made it clear to Seymore that he is a priority for the Knights. Heard also explained why the Miami native would be a good fit in Malzahn’s offense in the future.

“He was talking about how he needs me at UCF now,” Seymore said. “We went over film actually. He said when I first come in he’s going to have me at a certain position, then when we get it rolling he’s going to move me around.”

While he’s still verbally committed to Miami, Seymore explained why UCF stands out to him.

“I like that it isn’t too far from home,” Seymore said. “They’re competitive. The atmosphere is really good. The Bounce House is really good. I’d love to play in that atmosphere.”

He also likes the direction of the program.

If Seymore were flip from Miami to UCF, his first year of college football would be played in the Big 12 Conference.

“They’re trying to do big things,” he said about the Knights. “They’re going into a bigger conference and playing bigger people. They’re trying to show they’re one of the top programs, too.”
