Heinzes win honors at Mount St. Mary’s

On April 11, Mount St. Mary’s University junior outfielder Rachel Heinze, a St. Mary’s Ryken High School graduate from Charlotte Hall, has been named the Northeast Conference Softball Player of the Week, while freshman shortstop Lindsay Heinze, a St. Mary’s Ryken High School graduate from Charlotte Hall, has been named the NEC Softball Rookie of the Week.

Rachel Heinze continued her strong season, hitting .500 with three doubles, two home runs, five runs scored, four RBIs and a 1.400 slugging percentage for the week. She went 2 for 5 with a double and a home run in the Mount’s loss at Georgetown to start the week. She then went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and three RBIs in the Mount’s doublehead­er sweep of Sacred Heart (Conn.). She hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Mount to an 8-7 win in the opening game of the twinbill.

As of April 11, Heinze is hitting .340 with eight doubles, 15 home runs and 31 RBIs in 32 games this season. She leads the NEC with her 15 home runs this season, just one shy of matching the league’s single-season mark of 16 set by Andrea Lazzari of Wagner in 2009.

Lindsay Heinze was instrument­al in the Mount’s sweep of Sacred Heart, hitting a game-tying threerun homer in the opening game and a tie-breaking grand slam in Game 2. She finished the week 4 for 9 (.444) with two homers, eight RBIs and four runs scored with a 1.111 slugging percentage.

Her three-run homer in the fifth inning of Game 1 tied the game at 4 in a game the Mount eventally won 8-7 on Rachel Heinze’s walk-off homer. In Game 2, her grand slam in the bottom of the third snapped a 2-2 tie and propelled the Mount to the win.

Lindsay Heinze is hitting .286 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 32 games played this season.

On April 12, Mount St. Mary’s posted a pair of wins over visiting Howard.

In the opening game, Rachel Heinze hit her 16th home run of the season, matching the Northeast Conference’s single-season record.
