Tanner named 2016 Miss Charles County Farm Bureau
The Charles County Farm Bureau held their annual banquet Saturday, March 5, at the Newburg Volunteer Rescue and Fire Department. Haley Tanner, 16, was named Miss Charles County Farm Bureau 2016 while Lilly Collins, 16, was named first runner up and Tina Robertson, 16, was named second runner up.
Proceeds from the event’s silent auction went towards two $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the farm bureau.
The contest is open to single, young women between the ages of 16 and 19 who had not turned 20 by the state competition in August. Contestants or their parents must be members in good standing of Charles County Farm Bureau with knowledge of or involvement in agriculture. The winner received two checks totaling $300, and other contestants received $50.
The contestants were asked a series of questions about their farm and agriculture responsibilities, home responsibilities, community involvement as well as their plans for the future.
Lilly Collins, daughter of Alex and Angel Collins of Port Tobacco, attends Henr y E. Lackey High School, is a barn hand at Highway Stables in La Plata and is a member of the Mounted Wanderer’s 4-H club. Her love of horses has earned her many awards including the AQHA Novice 1 Championship – Top Ten Barrels in 2015. In the future, Collins hopes to obtain a criminology degree with a minor in photography.
Tina Robertson, daughter of John and Stephanie Robertson of Newburg, attends Maurice J. McDonough High School and is a volunteer with the Newburg and Bel-Alton Volunteer Fire Departments. She is a member of the Hot Shots 4-H club where she has ser ved as a camp counselor since 2013. In the future, Tina hopes to obtain a degree in nursing or paramedics.
Haley Tanner, daughter of John and Cathi Graff of Pisgah, attends Henr y E. Lackey High School and works part-time at Hancock Family Farms market where she helps stock freezers with meat, washes eggs and vegetables and waits on costumers. She is a member of the Farmers Fortune 4-H club. Some of her agricultural accomplishments include having the Champion Market Hog in 2011 and 2012. In the future, Haley hopes to obtain a degree in animal science or animal care and management.
As the winner, Tanner will act as an ambassador for the Charles County Farm Bureau where she will help promote agriculture and compete in the Miss Mar yland Agriculture contest in August.
