North Point selection process is level playing field

-

I’m a fellow student at North Point High School, who is a part of a STI Program and is active in sports. I’m writing a response letter to “A Loss for Charles County” letter that was published Friday, March 25, in the Maryland Independent. This letter that I’m referring to displays inappropriate and biased opinions that attack the NPHS community as a whole, especially the athletics department.

By publishing this letter, you have allowed other schools to feel as if they are inferior to NPHS. Not only that, you have also allowed a letter to discriminate our school because of our hard work and accomplishments.

The letter that TT Thomas wrote, really draws its attention towards the statement about North Point being a “super school” because of the recruiting of students from other schools due to their athletic skills. To tell you the truth, North Point does not personally pick and choose who attends here. The process is all done by a fair number system that selects the students from all over the state, meaning that anyone and everyone who applies here has a fair chance at attending their academics here.

Adding on to that, NPHS does not recruit nor steal athletic students from other schools. They are all chosen through the number system just like any other student who applies, and not to mention that the number system cannot predict student athletic skills in near the future. Our training in our athletics department pushes us to do our best so that we can be the best. So that means we do not choose and recruit our student athletes, but we simply make them and push them to work hard and make accomplishments. Furthermore, TT Thomas had also stated in his letter that NPHS, being a 4A school, should not compete with the other 1A and 2A schools in Charles County. If that were the case then the saying “quantity does not equal quality” should be written all over North Point’s property to represent our 4A athletics department.

I appreciate staying up to date with the Maryland Independent and I understand the idea of putting other people’s perspectives in the paper, but when a letter like the one I’m referring to now is published, it should not be in the paper if it displays biased and discriminatory opinions against another school.
