Martin wins award at Guilford

-

Guilford College (N.C.) recognized its top student-athletes at a year-end ceremony in Dana Auditorium May 1.

The 14 student-athlete award winners were nominated and selected by Guilford’s athletics staff. The ceremony included presentation of the first Quakie Awards, a collection of honors presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and remarks on sportsmanship by Guilford President Jane Fernandes.

The Richard Joyce Sportsmanship Award went to sophomore Kelly Martin of the women’s lacrosse team.

Martin, a North Point High School graduate from La Plata, is wrapping up her second season as a starter for Guilford’s women’s lacrosse team. An active member of the community, Martin has displayed her leadership qualities organizing team events and activities, including those involving Brooke Austin, the team’s honorary 8-year-old member who signed with Guilford this year through Team IMPACT, which serves to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Martin, also a SAAC member, is heavily involved on campus, serving as a resident advisor for first-year students. She is a member of the Guilford’s honors program, Guilford Christian Ministry and is a three-time dean’s list selection. Martin is an exercise and sport sciences and health sciences double major.
