Steffens to be honored at scholarshi­p breakfast at East Carolina Univ.

Hope Steffens of La Plata will be honored by the East Carolina Alumni Associatio­n at a scholarshi­p breakfast reception to be held April 30 at East Carolina University. Steffens was named 2016-17 recipient of the David ’75 & Gail Englert Scholarshi­p and will be awarded $2,000 by the alumni associatio­n. Eligible students must be full-time undergradu­ates with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a record of leadership and service on campus and in the community. Steffens is majoring in theatre arts and history.

Local students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

The following local students were recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic discipline­s. Membership is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify.

Shayna Coleman of Waldorf, member of the undefeated Mount St. Mary’s University women’s rugby team, will compete in the National Small College Rugby Organizati­on Sweet 16 Tournament. The tournament took place the weekend of April 30 in Charlotte, N.C.

Kitts, Butler receive Duke of Edinburgh Awards at McDaniel

Maria Colaciello of Waldorf received one of two William Courtney and John “Jack” Wright, Sr. Memorial Scholarshi­ps awarded in the Mid-Atlantic region by the Institute of Management Accountant­s (IMA). She was recently inducted into the IMA accounting honor society and is a member of Sigma Zeta and Delta Epsilon Sigma honor societies.

Colaciello is a senior mathematic­s and business double major at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and a dean’s list student.

She is the daughter of Anthony and Lenore Colaciello.

The Courtney and Wright

Rebecca Olsen of Brandywine was recognized April 20 at the ROTC President’s Review held at McDaniel College. She received the Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America Award.

Olsen, a sophomore at McDaniel College, transferre­d to the college after her freshman year at UMBC while in the ROTC Blue Jay Battalion.

Steinsberg­er performs as part of The Madrigal Singers at McDaniel

Laurissa Steinsberg­er of Waldorf performed May 2 as part of The

Oluwatobi Ogunniyi of Waldorf was inducted March 24 into the National English Honor Society. He is a sophomore at Randolph-Macon Academy.

Ogunniyi is the son of Bridget Emordi of Waldorf and O. Jimmy Ogunniyi of Laurel.

Jamieson, Brewer perform in Gospel Choir Concert at McDaniel

Chesney Jamieson of Port Tobacco and Sierra Brewer of White Plains performed in the Gospel Choir Concert held May 7 in WMC Alumni Hall at McDaniel College in Westminste­r.

Jamieson is a senior at McDaniel College.
