Commissioners Murphy, Robinson show lack of vision on comp plan

-

I am dismayed by the lack of vision demonstrated by our [Charles County Board of] Commissioners as it relates to the county’s comprehensive plan, specifically, Commissioners’ President Peter Murphy (D) and Commissioner Ken Robinson (D). These two believe that by preserving all of the land around the largest economic engine this county has is what is best for Charles County. I think this is their way of keeping things the way they are and not allowing the county to prosper and grow all for the sake of “preservation.”

If this “preservation” is allowed to pass, our county will not see any substantial economic development for years to come.

The Maryland Airport is the closest airport to the no fly zone around Washington, D.C. It has direct access to National Harbor and the new casino. We have the opportunity before us to create an economic engine that could help bolster Charles County businesses and generate a commercial tax base that this county longs to have. Instead President Murphy and Commissioner Robinson would rather preserve the entire western side of Charles County in the name of the environment.

Their position is short sighted at best and will lead to higher taxes. Don’t we already pay high enough taxes? I think so. When will we start looking at opportunities to bring jobs into Charles County as opposed to forcing them out? Our land use and zoning policies must change before it is too late to capitalize on the economic engine that could drive Charles County for years to come.

Oh, that’s right I forgot ... eco-tourisim will save the day. Robert Brough, Welcome
