Wrestling at a high level
Local champ Boblits won a national title this year
Virtually since the time that he could walk, Hughesville resident Evan Boblits has wanted to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Anthony Cable, a 2015 La Plata High School graduate and rising sophomore at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Boblits, a rising fifth-grader at T.C. Martin Elementary School in Bryantown, has already earned a stellar reputation on the wrestling mats at the ripe age of 10. He captured the Ohio Tournament of Champions, a national competition, as well as the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association and the Capitol Area Wresting League title at 65 pounds.
“My brother, Anthony, is the best at everything he does,” Boblits said, “and I want to be just like him.”
Boblits has compiled a lifetime record of 116-15 in his young career, which include back-to-back Maryland State Wrestling Association titles. His record is perhaps even more impressive considering that occasionally he is often asked to face older rivals in his weight class.
“Anytime he’s in against kids his age and his weight, he’s virtually unbeatable,” said Rampage Wrestling Club coach Jason Kiessling, also the head wrestling coach at St. Charles High School. “He’s so fast and so strong for his age. Anytime he gets in with other kids his age, he’s going to win that tournament. He’s even capable of holding his own against kids one or two years older than he is.”
Boblits, who also plays baseball, gymnastics and football, competes in mixed martial arts and also performs in piano recitals. In addition to his busy schedule on the mats, Boblits has gotten straight A’s throughout his education. His older brother Cable, graduated from La Plata with a 4.75 GPA.
“Believe me, Evan is very competitive and he adores his older brother,” said their mother, Christina Boblits. “Now he wants to do better than Anthony in everything, from school to wrestling. Anthony won the state wrestling title at 170 pounds as a senior, but Evan wants to win a state title every year.”
Currently, the Boblits live in the zone designated for St. Charles, which is potential good news for Kiessling, although not on the high priority list for Evan. Having watched his older brother wrestle and graduate from La Plata, Boblits literally wants to follow in his footsteps throughout his high school career.
“Right now, we’re in the St. Charles boundary,” his mother said, “but Evan is bound and determined to go to La Plata and break all of Anthony’s records there and win four state titles. We’ll have to see about that. That’s something that’s still a few years away.”
Kiessling had exceptional praise for Boblits, who has been part of his Rampage squad for the past three years. Kiessling is well aware that the young Boblits would prefer to attend La Plata rather than venture to nearby St. Charles, but he understands the determination and motivation of his youthful wrestling protege.
“He’s an exceptional kid,” Kiessling said. “I know how much he wants to follow in his brother’s footsteps and go to La Plata, but right now I’m enjoying having him part of our team. He’s got great support from his family and he does a lot of things and he does them all well. He’s an excellent wrestler and a straight-A student.”
Boblits will spend much of the remaining part of the summer participating in various wrestling camps, most of which span five-six days per week.
“Evan has tremendous skills and he’s always looking to improve,” Kiessling said. “When he’s not competing in a tournament, he’s at a camp working on his technique and his agility. He’s a lot more offensive-minded now than he was when he first started coming to me. He knows how to get the lead early in his matches and he looks to keep adding on.”
