Hawthorne dominates at Prince-Mont AllStar meet; other pools shine
A bevy of local swimmers were looking to make one final impressive splash on Saturday in the Prince-Mont All-Star meet at West Arundel Swim Club in Laurel. Two from the same pool departed with a pair of victories and one of their teammates prevailed as well.
Hawthorne Country Club swimmers Addy Donnick and Conor Vienneau both captured two events, while Gators teammate Esther Dugan also won one event. Hawthorne swimmers also performed well in other individual events and two relays that bookended the meet, one that was contested in yards not meters.
Vienneau, a rising freshman at La Plata High School, won the boys 13- to 14-year-old boys 50-yard freestyle in 23.47 seconds, 15 one-hundredths of a second ahead of Smallwood’s Lawrence Sapp, as well as the 100 individual medley (58.16). Vienneau was second in the 50 back (27.40).
“I slipped at the start of the 50 back,” Vienneau said. “It was a little slick and that cost me a little bit. I thought I swam well in the other two events. Now I’m getting ready for high school and facing older swimmers. I’ll move up to the 15-18 age group next summer, so that will definitely be a lot tougher.”
Donnick, a rising fifth-grader at Craik Elementary School in Pomfret, won the girls 10-and-Under 25 butterfly in 15.00 seconds, just two one-hundredths of a second ahead of Kate Spraul of Cheverly Swim and Racquet. She then won girls 9-10 50 free in 29.08, five one-hundredths of a second ahead of Spraul. Donnick also settled for fifth in the girls 9-10 25 backstroke (17.40). Like Vienneau, Donnick will also ascend into a tougher age group next summer when she joins the girls 11-12 bracket.
“I was happy with the way that I swam today,” Donnick said. “I thought I did well. It was a good meet. Next year is going to be tougher, but I’m excited about moving up.”
Vienneau and Donnick swam the opening leg of relays that performed superbly. Vienneau, David Dugan, Mikel Reyes and Liam Vienneau combined to take second in the boys 18-U 200 medley relay (1:45.66) that kicked off the meet, while Donnick, Esther Dugan, Megan Schueller and Chase McClure combined to take third in the girls 9-18 200 free relay (1:53.36) that ended it.
Esther Dugan prevailed by more than three seconds in the girls 11-12 100 IM (1:08.92) after earlier finishing third in the 50 fly (29.39) and second in the 50 free (27.05, just
nine one-hundredths of a second behind Nisa Ellis of Kingfish).
Several other Hawthorne swimmers performed well Saturday. Cole Rapczynski finished fifth in the boys 11-12 50 fly (31.52), 14th in the 50 breast (39.73) and eighth in the 100 IM (1:15.35). Reyes was third in the boys 13-14 50 fly (26.12). Schueller was seventh in the girls 13-14 50 fly (29.91) and 50 free (27.32) while fourth in the 50 breast (34.20). Liam Vienneau was 11th in the boys 15-18 50 fly (26.30) and ninth in the 100 IM (1:01.04). Naomi Dugan was seventh in the girls 9-10 50 free (31.80).
Smallwood Village Aquatic Club did not record any first-place efforts at the meet, but several Marlins finished second in individual events and others placed in the top five.
“We had a number of kids that did really well today,” Smallwood head coach Jeff Rivenburg said. “We had several kids finish second and several more finish third and a few more in the top five and top eight. It was a good meet for our kids. It was a good way to end the summer.”
Sapp finished second in the boys 13-14 50 fly (25.04) in addition to his second-place finishes behind Conor Vienneau in the 50 free (23.62) and 100 IM (59.50). Nathalie LaFontant, a rising freshman at North Point High School, finished second in the girls 13-14 50 free (25.69), second in the 50 breast (32.80) and third in the 100 IM (1:05.69).
Clayton Jameson was fourth in the boys 11-12 50 back (34.21), 10th in the boys 11-12 50 free (29.44) and seventh in the boys 12-U 100 IM (1:13.57). Mya Rivenburg, a rising sophomore at North Point, took eighth in the girls 13-14 50 free (27.39). Carla Arquero, a rising senior at North Point, was 10th in the 100 free (1:00.53), sixth in the 50 back (31.43). Nicholas Sapp was 10th in the boys 9-10 25 breast (20.89). Ryann Tompkins was fifth in the girls 9-10 25 breast (19.09). Cora Jameson was fifth in the girls 1112 50 back (34.14) and 10th in the girls 12-U 100 IM (1:17.13).
Smallwood’s quartet of Cory Hart, Nicholas Rawson, Ethan Chung and Kevin Rohrbaugh combined to place ninth in the boys 18-U 200 medley relay (1:51.05). The Marlins’ Nicholas Sapp, Clayton Jameson, Lawrence Sapp and Rohrbaugh took seventh in the boys 9-18 100 free relay (1:51.66)
Kerrigan McMillen from the Waves of Westlake finished second in the girls 13-14 50 back (30.40), fifth in the 50 fly (28.97) and fifth in the 100 IM (1:06.27). Waves teammate Isabella Smith finished fourth in the girls 11-12 50 fly (31.31) and 10th in the 50 free (28.93). Emily Decker, a rising junior at North Point, tied for 10th in the girls 15-18 50 fly (30.51) and finished eighth in the 50 breast (36.39) and 13th in the 100 IM (1:11.94). Tyler Whitsett was seventh in the boys 15-18 50 breast (30.31).
Westlake’s quartet of Christopher Dang, Ben Nordmann, Whitsett and Troy Burrows combined to place 13th in the boys 18-U 200 medley relay (1:55.45). The Waves group of Arquero, Adriana Imes, Tyra Agnew and Elissa Decker combined for 10th in the girls 18-U medley relay (2:12.24), while Zoe Wheeler, Smith, McMillen and Emily Decker combined to place 16th in the girls 9-18 200 free relay (2:04.93).
Indian Head’s quartet of RG Bolton, Zachary Will, Brett Culhane and William Micknick placed 17th in the boys 18-U 200 medley relay (2:00.14). Micknick would later finish 10th in the boys 13-14 50 breast (34.70), 11th in the 50 back (32.17) and 18th in the 100 IM (1:11.01). Bryan Mentzer was 17th in the boys 13-14 50 fly (31.69). Adam Diehl was 10th in the boys 11-12 50 back (36.83). Will was 17th in the 50 breast (32.70).
Bannister‘s Jonathan Parham finished ninth in the boys 8-U 25 breast (24.48) and Michael Parham placed 14th in the boys 12-U 100 IM (1:20.52).
Kings Landing also did not boast any gold medals on Saturday, but several of its swimmers accorded themselves well in individual events and relays.
Luke Hawit placed seventh in the boys 8-U 25 free (16.81). Philip Means took sixth in the boys 1314 50 free (25.18), ninth in the 50 breast (34.55) and was sixth in the 100 IM (1:03.65). Isaiah Johnson was eighth in the boys 15-18 100 free (52.08) and fifth in the 50 back (27.16). Tanner Currie placed sixth in the boys 8-U 25 breast (24.00). Tommy Biehn was fifth in the boys 9-10 25 back (18.38). Lyla Smith was ninth in the girls 9-10 25 back (19.09). Benjamin Voelker was ninth in the boys 13-14 100 IM (1:05.31). Sarah Cole was 10th in the girls 15-18 100 IM (1:10.72).
Kings Landing’s quartet of Isaiah Johnson, Zachary Spain, John Bubser and Means placed 10th in the boys 18-U 200 medley relay (1:52.98). Sarah Cole, Olivia Cole, Laurel Gallaudet and Emma Biehn combined to finish 13th in the girls 18-U 200 medley relay (2:17.09). Tyler Droneberger, Alexandra Uhlmann, Kathryn Schmidt and Hawit combined for seventh in the mixed 8-U 100 free relay (1:15.83). Tommy Biehn, Jeffrey Rivas, Connor Currie and Johnson combined for eighth in the boys 9-18 200 free relay (1:51.95). Aspen Gallaudet, Emma Biehn, Nyah Hartwell and Sarah Cole took 10th in the girls 9-18 200 free relay (2:01.28).
