Volunteers needed for United Way Day of Caring
United Way of Charles County will host its 22nd Annual Day of Caring on Sept. 1. The event has been a September community tradition since 1995 where partner agencies are able to have volunteers come in and take care of some of their needs.
This year, 14 agencies with 32 projects were submitted, requiring more than 240 volunteers. Some of this years projects are gardening, landscaping, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor painting, meal delivery, construction type jobs and an IT/website project, among others.
The day begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees, with a light breakfast before heading out to the various locations. T-shirts are available to volunteers. Bring a bagged lunch, snacks and additional beverages for the duration.

County to hold hazardous waste collection Aug. 6
The Charles County Department of Public Works will hold the next household hazardous waste collection on Saturday, Aug. 6. The household hazardous waste collection site is located in the parking lot of the Department of Public Works building, located at 10430 Audie Lane, off of Radio Station Road in La Plata. Collection hours are 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Items accepted free of charge include: pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, gasoline, oil-based paint, cleaning supplies, pool chemicals, fluorescent lights, mercury thermometers, and other poisons found in the home. Remember to mark any container that does not have a readable, original label.
Unacceptable materials include bio-medical waste (sharps, needles, anything with bodily fluids), latex paint, prescription drugs, and ammunition. Used motor oil, anti-freeze, propane tanks, and batteries are accepted on a regular basis at various collection sites.
Latex paint is not considered hazardous waste and can be placed in household trash as long as it is solidified. This can be accomplished by adding kitty litter, shredded paper, paint hardener, or sawdust to aid in drying it out. Household hazardous waste collection will occur on the first Saturday of each month through December.
Upcoming 2016 collection dates are: Aug. 6, Sept. 3, Oct. 1, Nov. 5 and Dec. 3.

CSM to host auditions for fall theater season
The College of Southern Maryland has four in-house productions scheduled for its fall theater schedule. Auditions are open to the public and will take place in August.
Auditions for the four plays will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 and 9 in the Fine Arts Center Theatre on the La Plata Campus.
Roles for performers 8 years of age and older are available for a Children’s Theatre performance of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” and the Main Stage musical “Pinocchio.” Actors 18 years of age and older are needed for Main Stage’s “The Runner Stumbles” and Cause Theatre’s “Benched.” Those interested should prepare a one-minute monologue and 16 bars of a song with music for the accompanist (no a cappella). Come dressed to move.

Community Bank announces kickoff of 2017 calendar contest
Community Bank of the Chesapeake is now accepting submissions for its annual Calendar Contest. The public is invited to submit original photographs of the local communities within the bank’s service area which includes Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties and Annapolis, as well as Fredericksburg, Va. A total of 14 winners will be selected and will have their winning photos featured in the bank’s 2017 calendar.
Photo submissions will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 2. Anyone wishing to enter the contest should email a digital copy of their photo to Stefanie Cusick, marketing and communications specialist, at cusicks@cbtc.com, or through Community Bank of the Chesapeake’s Facebook page. All photos must be 8.5 inches by 11 inches, landscape oriented, and a minimum of 300 dpi (dots per inch). Each photo submitted must also include a signed release form in order to be considered.
As part of the calendar contest, the community will also have the opportunity to vote for a “People’s Choice” winner on the bank’s Facebook page. The “People’s Choice” voting period will take place from Sept. 12-Sept. 19.
