School board Centennial Committee thanks community

-

This year marks the Charles County Board of Education’s 100th anniversary as a public body corporate. To help us celebrate this milestone, we provided a three-part speaker series. “Education: Then and Now” was held Sept. 2 at the Port Tobacco Courthouse and One Room Schoolhouse, “Segregation and Education” was held Sept. 16-17 at the McConchie One-Room Schoolhouse at the Charles County Fairgrounds, and “When Disasters Strike, We’re Ready” took place Oct. 1 at the James E. Richmond Science Center at St. Charles High School. We hope that our community enjoyed this series.

Pulling all of these presentations together was quite an effort — one that could not have been accomplished without the partnerships and assistance provided by numerous organizations and individuals from our community.

To that end, the Centennial Celebration Committee would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the following organizations and individuals for their invaluable assistance in this endeavor: Charles County Branch of the NAACP, Charles County Fair Inc., Charles County Public Schools Central Office, Charles County Retired School Personnel Association, College of Southern Maryland’s Southern Maryland Studies Center, the Mar yland Independent, McConchie Schoolhouse Committee, Maurice J. McDonough High School, Murphy’s Store, James E. Richmond Science Center, St. Charles High School, Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco, Dale Cornette, Joyce Edelen, Mar y Fenton, Marlene Jamieson, Anna Kephart, Russell Lee, Margaret Marshall, Carolyn Rogers, Karen Rowledge, Dorothea Smith, George Smith, Conchita Walls, Harold Watts, Abigail Wearmouth, Mar y Louise Webb and Tina Wilson.

We have truly enjoyed working with these organizations and individuals as we celebrate our 100th anniversar y, and we appreciate the community’s support of Charles County Public Schools. Here’s to the next 100! Jennifer Abell, Victoria T. Kelly, Barbara Palko, La Plata The writers are members of the Charles County Board of Education Centennial Celebration Committee.
