Waldorf’s Reed to put unbeaten record on the line
Waldorf resident heading back to Philly for fight
In the weeks leading up to his fight this evening against Aaron Herrera at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia, Waldorf resident Mike “Yes Indeed” Reed has maintained a steady regimen of running daily and sparring with various local fighters.
Reed (19-0) who has won 11 of his fights by knockout and the other eight by unanimous decision, is rapidly climbing the ranks of the Super Lightweight (140 pounds) division and is currently rated seventh in the United States Boxing Association ratings and 15th by the North American Boxing Federation in only three years as a professional.
But Reed is hardly content with scanning the rankings to find his name. He has maintained a very busy schedule of training, participating in football-like two-a-days three times each week, and spending ample time in the ring. He fought six times in 2013, another six times in 2014 and had five bouts last year and tonight will be his third fight this year.
“I’m just one of those fighters that likes to stay busy,” Reed said after Monday’s workout in Waldorf. “My father, Michael Pinson, who is also my trainer, knows what is best for me. When he wants me to work on something, he makes sure that
I get in the ring and spar. When he thinks I’m sharp for a fight, he backs off my sparring and focuses on other aspects on my training.”
Herrera (29-4-1) has won 18 of his fights by knockout and was knocked out in one of his four defeats. He won the first 19 fights of his career and once held the WBC Mundo Hispano Lightweight Championship. But after a loss to Fernando Garcia in Tijuana on July 21, 2012 and two subsequent losses, Herrera replaced trainer Roman Acosta for Julio Tarrago.
“He’s tall and he’s going to have a reach advantage,” Reed said of Herrera. “But I think he can be lured into a brawl. I want to definitely get him into a battle. He’s very good. He reminds me of Jorge Marquez who I fought [at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington] two years ago. He’s definitely very good, but I think I can lure him into a brawl.”
Reed’s most recent fight was a six-round technical knockout over Abraham Cordero at Madison Square Garden in New York City, often known as one of the East Coast’s most famed boxing venues and sports arenas in general. His previous fight earlier in the year was against Samuel Amoaka, who Reed defeated by unanimous decision and by winning all six rounds according to the three judges scorecards, at the 2300 Arena.
“It’s not a really big place, but it’s a great place to fight,” Reed said of the 2300 Arena. “The place had a really good atmosphere. The best part for me is that it’s not that far away. It’s only a two-hour drive so my family and friends and fans can makes that trip up and still make it back to have a full weekend at home.”
Reed, who knocked out Kareem McFarland in the first round of their scheduled fourround fight in his career debut at Rosecroft on March 2, 2013, not only owns a perfect record from 19 fights he has almost been perfect within those bouts. In four of his eight unanimous decisions he has won every round according to the three judges scorecards for those bouts.
In his third fight against DeMarcus Rogers at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., Reed lost one round according to one of the three judges and later in his eighth fight against Bilal Mahasin at Rosecroft, he lost one of the six rounds according to one judge.
Reed’s only relatively close fight, at least according to the judges scorecards posted, came against Oscar Valenzuela at the Century Link Center in Omaha, Neb. Reed won that fight by unanimous decision, but the scorecards read 79-76, 77-75, 7775, meaning that two of the judges thought Reed only won five of the eight rounds.
