Plenty of holiday happenings to enjoy

-

The last few months have been a roller coaster of heated American politics, protests and election madness. But the end of this tumultuous 2016 is finally approaching and, with it, that special time of year when we can — and should — set aside our political hangups and focus on things that matter a bit closer to the heart: family and community.

There’s something about December and the approaching holidays that ignites a spirit of togetherness in us. For some, that spirit manifests itself in charitable giving and volunteerism. For others, it means spending more time with loved ones and making lasting memories. For those who are looking for ways to enjoy time with both family and community, Charles County has an abundance of activities lined up this weekend and beyond to keep the holiday spirit rolling. After all, Christmas is only a little more than two weeks off.

Children can enjoy Breakfast with Santa in La Plata this Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon in the La Plata Town Hall. Reservations are required. Also in La Plata, the Port Tobacco Players will be performing “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 18.

For those interested in musical salutes to the yuletide season, the College of Southern Maryland will present its chorale and chamber concert at 8 p.m. at the La Plata campus Fine Arts Building theater. The James E. Richmond Science Center will host “Winterfest!” featuring holiday musicals “Let it Snow” and “Season of Light” in the building’s 60-foot Digital Dome Theater from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 10.

The Town of Indian Head will host its sixth annual memorial ribbon ceremony and free community dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Village Green Pavilion. The town will also host its annual Holiday Festival and Craft Fair from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 13 at the pavilion, featuring live entertainment, crafters, photos with Santa and the Painter Family’s Antique Running Trains. And Santa will make another appearance in the town during the annual Indian Head Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad’s Santa Run Thru Town from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 23.

There are many other events and activities in Charles County for the holidays. Check out our community section or our website at www.somdnews.com/ independent for even more details.

We invite and encourage you to take advantage of some of these community events and create more fond family memories of this most wonderful time of the year.
