New funds to help Southern Maryland nonprofits grow
The Community Foundation of Southern Maryland announced the creation of four new Seedling Funds by local donors to support the causes and institutions they care about in their communities. The four funds are:
• St. John’s School Scholarship Fund: A designated endowment fund established by Mike and Barbara Thompson of Hollywood to provide scholarships for students attending St. John’s School now and forever. The fund will support students’ tuition and fees based on financial need to be allocated at the discretion of the school principal.
• George Martin Connelly Jr. Financial and Social Equality Fund: A donor-advised fund that supports programs to end partner/domestic violence, create financial literacy programs and outreach, assist the
region’s LGBTQ population affected by homelessness, and related donor interests.
• Elaine’s Gift Fund: A non-endowed fund established in memor y of Elaine Fagan that provides college scholarships to the children of single parents.
• Leonard Hall Junior Naval Academy Fund: An endowment fund established to support scholar- ships, operating expenses, and mission-oriented programs at the Leonardtown academy.
Unlike other types of charitable gift funds that require a minimum upfront contribution, Seedling Funds can be opened with little or no initial contribution and gradually added to over time. When the tax-deductible contributions to the fund reach $5,000, the donor may then direct the foundation to begin paying out funds to the organizations and causes they have designated, or allow the foundation to allocate the funds as it sees fit.
Seedling Funds can be used to provide grants and scholarships for 501c3 nonprofits, educational institutions, and governmental agencies. They may be endowed — that is, perpetual funds that award grants annually — or non-endowed — that is, grants that are given throughout the year.
For more information on how to open a Seedling Fund to support a charitable organization in the community, contact Gretchen Hardman at 240-670-4483, or gretchen@cfsomd.org.

She worked with detectives on the Shop with a Cop and summer camp programs. During that time, she began a memorial for victims of homicide in St. Mary’s County.
