North Point girls soccer wins region title
One year after being upended by Leonardtown in a 4A South Region semifinal contest, the North Point High School girls soccer team captured its first region crown by defeating Parkdale, 7-0.
North Point (14-3-1) extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games with the win over Parkdale — a skein that was snapped in the 4A state semifinals by Walter Johnson — as the Eagles got three goals from senior Brianna Reid and one each from Mikayla Johnson, Jordin Anderson, Isabel Piazza and Courtney Moss in the lopsided tally over the Panthers.
“This is a really big accomplishment because during the summer we said that we want a [state title] ring and this was another big step, “Reid said after the win over Parkdale. “We have two more games left and our main goal is to win it all. The season started out rough, but we love each other to death and I would do anything for them. Our bond has gotten stronger toward the end of the season.”
Earlier in the postseason, North Point avenged several dramatic setbacks against Leonardtown when it upended the defending region champion, 1-0, in one of the biggest victories in the brief history of the program. But that would eventually get topped by the Eagles 7-0 thumping of Parkdale on a day when goalie Tailor Gammons did not need to record a save to earn the shutout.
After opening the season with a pair of losses, North Point went two months before tasting another defeat. Along the way the Eagles outscored their foes 82-7 and recorded 10 shutouts, including the nail-biter over Leonardtown during the region tournament. North Point allowed only one goal in the region playoffs in a 2-1 victory over Bowie.
