North Point girls basketball wins region

The North Point High School girls basketball team captured the 4A East Region crown with a narrow, 54-52 victory over host Old Mill of Anne Arundel County, the Eagles’ fifth region ti- tle in the last six seasons.

The Eagles bid for a 4A state title, however, came to an end one week later when they were trounced by Walt Whitman of Montgomery County, 64-37, in one of two 4A state semifinals at Towson University’s SECU Arena.

In the 4A East Region title contest, North Point raced to a comfortabl­e 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and still held a 32-22 advantage at the intermissi­on and the Eagles maintained a solid 44-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. But the hosts gradual- ly chipped away at the Eagles lead in the final frame and got to within a single bucket before eventually succumbing.

North Point, which ad- vanced to the region final by trouncing Chopticon 51-34 in the section finals, was led by Necole Hope with 19 points and the Eagles lone senior, Clara Bryson, added 12 points. The Eagles had earlier defeated the Braves, 4847, to capture the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Championsh­ip game in a dramatical­ly different affair.

In the state semifinal setback against , four of the Eagles five leading scorers were underclass­men, suggesting that North Point should be a region and state title contender again in the 2016-17 season under coach Michael Serpone. North Point concluded the 2015-16 season with a 24-3 mark and garnered the SMAC title in addition to the region crown.
