A White Plains women was severely injured in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday morning, and charges may be pending for the driver who al- legedly ran away from the wreckage.

Authorities say David Anthony Thompson Jr., 18, of Charlotte Hall reportedly crashed the car into several trees and was seen fleeing the scene on foot, though he later returned, according to a Maryland State Police press release. The passenger, Taylor MacKenzie Dye, 18, of White Plains, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries after she was extracted from the overturned vehicle.

Around 8:59 a.m. on Sunday, Maryland State Police troopers responded to the accident on northbound Route 5 in the area of Brandywine Road, the release states. As first responders arrived on scene, witnesses told authorities they reportedly saw the driver, later identified as Thompson, exit the overturned Acura MDX and flee the scene on foot into a wooded area.

Troopers, K9 units and a bloodhound attempted to track the driver’s foot- prints through the snow with the help of a U.S. Park Police helicopter, but were unable to find him, according to police. Later, however, Thompson reportedly returned to the scene of the crash.

The northbound lanes of Route 5 were closed for about five hours during the investigation and vehicle removal.

The investigation is ongoing.
