Police investigat­ing homicide after Waldorf man found dead

Police are actively investigat- ing a homicide after a man was found dead in a wooded area on Saturday near Mattawoman Lane in Waldorf.

Authoritie­s have identified the victim as Juan Gonzales-Mejia, 34, of Waldorf. Gonzales-Mejia suffered trauma to his body, and was pronounced dead on scene, according to a Prince George’s County Police Department spokespers­on. The agency is not releasing any further infor- mation regarding the nature of his death at this time.

Prince George’s County detectives are leading the investigat­ion, and a reward of up to $25,000 has been offered for informatio­n leading to an arrest and indictment.

Around 3 p.m. on Saturday, a citizen flagged down a Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputy after noticing the man lying in a wooded area in the 16900

block of Mattawoman Lane, authoritie­s reported. Due to the area where the victim was found, the investigat­ion was turned over to Prince George’s County Police Department detectives, who are continuing to work to identify a suspect, or suspects, and a motive.
