Lavish Creations to host launch party
A launch party for Lavish Creations by Tiffany is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Dorchester Community Center in Waldorf.
Lavish Creations is a new, all-inclusive wedding planning company started by wedding planner Tiffany Richards, according to a news release.
The party is designed to be a networking event among vendors. The company will also be looking for new vendors to put on its preferred vendors list. Business cards can be dropped off at the registration table in the front.

Bailey joins commercial real estate sales team
Lillian Mattingly, broker and co-owner of Calvert Commercial Real Estate, announced that Christy Bailey has joined her team as a licensed agent.
Bailey has lived in Calvert County for over 40 years and worked with the business community in many different professional capacities the last 25 years, according to a news release.
“Christy’s positive energy and virtuous work ethic create outstanding results. We are grateful for her efforts in helping us support the business community in Southern Maryland,” Mattingly said in the release.
Prior to joining the team at Calvert Commercial, she was the general manager and publisher for Southern Maryland Newspapers. She was involved with commercial real estate owners as well as the legal and business community in that role.
Bailey is active in volunteer organizations, including the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce, the Chesapeake Cares Food Pantry, Tri-County Animal Shelter and the Calvert Humane Society, along with being a past board member for the Mar yland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association.
Christy and her husband, Fred Bailey, enjoy five grown children, four grandchildren and two dogs. The two live alongside the Chesapeake and enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking.
Bailey joins the ranks of Calvert Commercial Real Estate’s team which includes co-owner Tyler Fadely, Ron Wells, David Fegan and Lillian Mattingly.
Slater recognized by National Safety Council
The National Safety Council (NSC) has recognized Austin J. Slater, Jr., the president and CEO of Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO), as a CEO Who “Gets It” for 2017, according to a news release.
Every year, the NSC recognizes safety leaders whose actions demonstrate a personal commitment to creating and sustaining a culture of workplace safety and health.
According to Deborah A. P. Hersman, president and CEO of the NSC, “A culture of safety and well-being is one that takes time, dedication, a thoughtful approach and a CEO who ‘gets it.’ These leaders not only understand how to run a great business, but also know deep down that safety is paramount for their employees, their clients, and their families.”
Some of Slater’s accomplishments that were recognized by the NSC are featured in the February issue of Safety+Health magazine and are:
• Attends and presents at employee safety meetings;
• Personally wear-tested an approved flame-resistant company uniform while performing maintenance activities to assess the comfort of the garment;
• Opened a campus gym, allowing employees to exercise at no cost;
• Opened a campus family health center that allows retirees, employees and family members access to urgent and routine medical care; and
• Implemented a smoke-free policy for company vehicles and worksites.
Slater described an experience that established safety as a primary mission. “Following an unusual October snowstorm in 1979, shortly after I began working at SMECO, our organization suffered the tragic loss of two linemen to electrocution during power restoration efforts,” Slater said in the release. “That loss was preventable. Shortcuts, such as failure to wear personal protective equipment and not following established work practices, cost two men their lives. That experience forged a ‘never again’ promise and mindset. And we have made good on that pledge.”
SMECO invests in ergonomically-engineered tools to assist in utility construction and in industry-leading personal protective equipment to ensure safety and comfort. The cooperative has constructed a new technical training facility and developed an analytics-based safety platform to help track safety incident data, spot trends, communicate events and take proactive measures to reduce accidents and maintain the health and wellbeing of employees.
