Mallows Bay public scoping meeting set for March 7

-

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will hold the first of two public scoping meetings 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Charles County Government Building, 200 Baltimore St., La Plata. NOAA is seeking input on four alternative map proposals for Mallows Bay. In a first for the state of Maryland and the Chesapeake watershed, NOAA declared its intent to designate Mallows Bay as a National Marine Sanctuary in October 2015.

This meeting is an opportunity for the public, partners and other stakeholders to review and comment on the sanctuary proposal. Public input will assist NOAA in moving forward with the designation process. To submit formal written comment regarding the nomination, visit sanctuaries.noaa.gov/ mallows-bay. Electronic and mailed comments must be received by March 31. The second Mallows Bay public meeting will be held 6-9 p.m. at Anne Arundel Community College Center in the Applied Learning and Technology Building, 101 College Parkway, Arnold, Room 100.

In November 2016, art students from the county’s seven public high schools and Robert D. Stetham Ed- ucational Center participat- ed in the Mallows Bay Art project. Students captured Mallows Bay on various mediums, including sketching, painting, video, and photography. Samples of the artwork will be showcased at the Mallows Bay public meeting on March 7.

Mallows Bay, located near the Potomac River, is home to the largest ship graveyard in the Western Hemisphere. The area offers unique archaeological, recreational, historical, cultural, educational and environmental opportunities for residents and tourists. The site includes historic vessels dating back to the Revolutionary War, remains of the largest ‘Ghost Fleet’ of the World War I steamships, wildlife viewing areas, fishing, boating access and a hiking trail.

CSM to host Dual Enrollment Parent Nights

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) invites area parents of high school students to attend Dual Enrollment Parent Night at one of the college’s three campuses, Feb. 16, March 1 and 2.

Dual enrollment allows high school students to take classes at CSM for college credit while satisfying high school graduation requirements. Benefits of dual enrollment include a savings on tuition and a way for college-bound students to get a head start on earning credits toward their degree. Dual-enrolled students pay half of CSM’s regular tuition rate for their courses, and college credits earned at CSM can be transferred to most colleges and universities around the country.

This is a competitive admissions program, and students must demon- strate college-readiness to be dually enrolled. Participants in dual enrollment must complete an application, complete college level placement options and submit a signed form by May 15 for the summer semester, July 15 for the fall semester and Dec. 15 for the spring semester.

The La Plata Campus Dual Enrollment Parent Night will be 6 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Business and Industry (BI) Building, Room 113/113E, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

The Prince Frederick Campus event will be 6 p.m. March 1 in Building B, Multipurpose Room, 115 J.W. Williams Road, Prince Frederick.

The St. Mary’s Campus event will be 6 p.m. March 2 in Building A, Room 206, 22950 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown.
