La Plata town councilman Joseph Norris says he loves his hometown with all of his heart and wants to continue to see the area thrive over the next few years. Recently, the councilman officially announced that he will be running for re-election to his Ward 4 council seat in May 2017.

“It has been a privilege to serve on the La Plata Town Council and I would like to continue to serve the people of La Plata. I particularly enjoy hearing constituents and helping the people resolve issues. It brings a lot of satisfaction to be able to do that,” Norris said.

He describes himself as a dedicated, energetic and blessed individual.

Norris has served on the council since his election in 2009 and is the appointed representative to the town’s Design Review Board. He has spent most of his life in La Plata and believes that his background in business makes him an asset to the town and its residents.

“I was self-employed for most of my life. I had a full-service car wash business in Northern Virginia with my brother and did small scale building and developing of industrial and residential projects, and rental properties, over the years,” he said.

Later on, Nor ris ser ved as the elected treasurer of Charles County until 2002 (elected for two terms) when he became the La Plata treasurer. He also served as vice president and president of the Southern Maryland Municipal Association. Norris also served as acting town manager of La Plata for a short time.

Norris said he would like to accomplish many tasks if re-elected — increase jobs in the town, build and develop a business park, and restore disbanded homeowners associations.

“I would like to bring more jobs to La Plata so that people will not have to commute and spend so much of their time on the road. I’m also working on the possibility of having a business park that may bring some opportunities to the town. We also have a lot of homeowners associations that have disbanded and I would like to help them resolve those issues,” Norris said.

He also hopes to bring more services and recreation to the town for the citizens to enjoy.

He said, “People know what they will get from me. They know if they need something I will do my best to help and I have the best interest of the whole town at heart, meaning all the citizens and the businesses. I want them all to do well. The better [the businesses] do then the better it is for the residents.”

Norris said every experience in his life has helped him become the councilman that he is today.

“I am proud to call La Plata my home and hope to live here the rest of my life,” he said.
