St. Charles Co. reports 202 lots sold for 2016
The St. Charles Companies reported 202 new home lot sales for 2016, the fifth year in a row in which more than 200 lots were sold in the 9,200-acre community near Waldorf, according to a news release.
In 2016, St. Charles also sold more than $9.2 million in commercial office property as demand for business locations continues to grow, the release stated.
The company also announced that national homebuilder D.R. Horton will join the St. Charles roster of single-family home builders this year. D.R. Horton will build five different designs that offer a variety of flexibility, three of which are new designs to appeal to today’s families.
“We are excited to add the strength of D.R. Horton, America’s largest homebuilder, to St. Charles,” St. Charles Companies President Matthew M. Martin said in the release. “Their commitment to quality and value makes them an ideal addition to St. Charles.”
St. Charles continues to be the top-selling new home community in Southern Maryland, according to the release. The planned community is 11 miles south of the Capital Beltway, offers easy access to the area’s transportation corridors, and is close to Southern Maryland’s military bases and National Harbor.
St. Charles High School, built on a 100-acre site donated by The St. Charles Companies, includes programs on environmental and natural resource management and technology. The “Science on a Sphere” program was co-developed by NASA and provides students with visual instruction about science, the Earth and the environment.
Commercial real estate data firm, John Burns Real Estate Consulting, has consistently ranked St. Charles in the top 50 on a list of top selling master planned communities.
The community features Regency Furniture (baseball) Stadium, the Waldorf West library and the new St. Charles High School.

Bennett earns certificate for management
Nicole Bennett of Br yans Road recently passed the examination to be a certified medical manager as acknowledged by the Professional Association of Health Care Office Management, according to a news release.
The association administers the examination to validate the knowledge and skills of office managers of physician practices throughout the nation, according to the release. The three-hour test challenges the candidate in nine areas that include managed care, practice accounting, third party reimbursement, healthcare law, risk management and other areas related to effectively managing a healthcare office.
Membership in the association consists of office workers in group practices within medical, dental, osteopathic and allied science professionals.
Leadership Maryland announces Class of 2017
Leadership Mar yland announced recently the Class of 2017 selection, consisting of 52 business and community leaders from across the state chosen to participate in the professional development program dedicated to building a better Maryland, according to a news release.
Two Southern Maryland leaders were selected. Roy C. McGrath of Waldorf is the director/CEO of Maryland Environmental Services for the state. Barbara J. “Julie” Paluda of Huntingtown is the capital projects analyst for Calvert County.
The 25th class reflects a cross-section of the state, including diversity of geographic location, profession, ethnicity and gender. The 52 individuals will complete an eight month hands-on learning program focused on the state’s most vital issues.
Following a two-day opening retreat in April, the class will attend five two-day sessions traversing the state focusing on economic development, education, health and human services, criminal justice, the environment and multiculturalism/diversity. These sessions will be followed by a one-day closing retreat in November and a graduation celebration in December. More than 100 experts representing business, government, education and the nonprofit community will serve as panelists and guest speakers.
“The selection process for the Class of 2017 was very competitive this year, as we had an extraordinary pool of diverse and experienced applicants to choose from,” Renée M. Winsky (‘05), president and CEO of Leadership Maryland, said in the release. “The 52 selected participants represent a diverse and broad spectrum of highly qualified executives from across the state.”
